How to Look After a Carpet and Keep the Pile Alive

A carpet does not wear out from walking on it but from the sand inside the pile: each grain works like an abrasive, cutting the fibre at the base. That is why regular vacuuming does more for the life of a carpet than any deep clean — it removes the abrasive before it does its work.

What you need

• Carpet shampoo or 1 teaspoon of washing-up liquid per litre
• Baking soda — 100 g for odours
• White vinegar 9 % — 2 tablespoons per litre for refreshing colour

• A vacuum with an adjustable head
• A soft brush
• White microfibre cloths
• A spray bottle

Step by step

1. Vacuum along the pile first. Two or three passes in the direction it lies, so the head does not tear at the fibre.
2. Then go against it. One pass across the lie lifts what has settled at the base — this is where the sand comes out.
3. Deal with stains at once. Blot with a dry cloth, then the appropriate product. A stain older than a day is a different job.
4. Refresh with soda. Scatter over the pile, leave an hour, vacuum off. It absorbs the odours a vacuum leaves behind.
5. Rotate the carpet. Every three months, 180 degrees, so the traffic path moves and the pile wears evenly.
6. Air it. Twice a year outdoors in the shade. Sun fades wool and viscose faster than years of use.

Method 2 — by material

Wool takes only mild products with a neutral pH: alkali destroys the fibre and the pile goes brittle. Synthetics tolerate almost anything, including steam. Viscose is the most difficult — it darkens from water and the marks stay, so it is vacuumed and given to a specialist rather than cleaned at home. Handmade silk is not a home job under any circumstances.

Method 3 — fitted carpet

The difference from a rug is that fitted carpet cannot be lifted or aired, so all the dust stays in the pile and the underlay. It needs vacuuming twice as often, and wet cleaning only with a machine that draws the water back — an ordinary shampoo poured on and blotted soaks the underlay and dries for days.

Method 4 — indentations from furniture

A sofa leg leaves a dent that looks permanent and usually is not. An ice cube left in the hollow melts slowly, the fibre swells as it takes up the water, and the pile lifts on its own; what remains is teased up with a fork and dried. On wool it works almost every time, on synthetics roughly half. The prevention is simpler: move the furniture a few centimetres when you rotate the carpet, so no leg stands in the same place for years.

What to avoid

• Beating a carpet with a stick. The old method breaks the fibre at the base; a vacuum removes more and damages nothing.
• Hot water on wool. The pile shrinks and the carpet loses shape at the edges.
• Drying in the sun. Colours fade unevenly and the patch is permanent.
• Walking on it while damp. Dirt from shoes goes straight into an open pile and sets there.

How often it actually needs washing

With regular vacuuming, once a year is enough in a home without animals and twice with them. More often is not better: every wet clean is stress for the fibre, and a carpet cleaned quarterly ages faster than one vacuumed properly and cleaned once.

The sign that it is time: the pile in the traffic path lies flat and looks darker than the edges even after vacuuming. That is dirt at the base, and only wet cleaning takes it out.

When to call a cleaner

Extraction carpet cleaning costs UAH 130 per square metre, and fitted carpet the same. The minimum order for upholstery work is UAH 2,000, so a carpet is usually booked with a sofa at UAH 1,299 in a single visit.
