Cleaning before the holidays: when to book and what to fit in

Being straight about dates

The last week of December is the busiest week of the year. Dates on the 29th to 31st are usually gone by mid-month, and that is not a sales tactic: the number of cleaners on those days is the same as on any other, while three times as many people want one.

If you need the clean right before the holiday, book two or three weeks ahead. If you are flexible, a visit on the 26th to 28th costs the same and is almost always available.

The price does not depend on the date: one room UAH 1,550, two rooms 1,950, three rooms 2,350.

What people add before guests arrive

• The kitchen. The centre of the occasion. A deep kitchen clean is UAH 2,800; separately, oven 499, extractor hood 350, fridge 450.
• Windows. Winter evenings start early, and clean glass changes a room noticeably under artificial light. UAH 320 per window.
• The guest bathroom. Included in the base, but the most closely inspected room in the flat.
• Ironing. Tablecloths and holiday textiles at UAH 399 per hour.

Cleaning after the holiday

A second visit is needed more often than people expect, and it is a different job. After a dinner the problem is not dust but marks: wine on the sofa, grease on the tablecloth, crumbs in the fabric of the chairs.

A fresh mark comes out almost always; the same mark two weeks later comes out far less well. So upholstery cleaning after the holidays is best booked in the first days: a two-seater sofa is UAH 1,299, chairs 199 each.

How much time to allow

A one-room flat takes four to five hours, a two-room flat with the kitchen seven to eight. If guests arrive in the evening, book the morning: the floors dry and the smell of the products clears by then.

Deep kitchen cleaning is better done a day or two ahead rather than on the day: the oven and hood take time, and on the day itself the kitchen has to be free for cooking.

If time is short

With only a few hours before guests arrive, it makes more sense to add a second cleaner for UAH 1,000 than to stretch one: two people do the same flat in roughly half the time, and the total rises by a fixed amount rather than doubling.

Order matters too: kitchen and bathroom first, then rooms, floors last. If time is very short, tell the cleaner which rooms the guests will see and which they will not.
