Construction dust removal after building work

Construction dust differs from household dust in two ways: it is abrasive and very fine. Cement and gypsum particles stay airborne for hours and settle again — so it cannot be removed in one visit, and anyone who promises otherwise simply comes back a second time for the same money.

What it costs

UAH 150 per square metre with a minimum order of 3,000 — the same rate as post-renovation cleaning, because dust is what that work mostly is, not a separate service with its own price list.

How it is removed

  1. Everything top down first: ceiling, light fittings, tops of cupboards, cornices, doors.
  2. A vacuum with a bag and a HEPA filter — not a domestic one: fine dust kills a bagless machine and returns to the room through the filter.
  3. The floor in three or four passes with the water changed after each.
  4. Radiators, ventilation grilles and window drainage slots — the places dust comes back from last.
  5. A return pass over the horizontal surfaces a day or two later.

Where it hides

Four places make it seem as though the dust «comes back». Radiator fins — it flies out the first time the heating comes on. The drainage slots at the bottom of the window profile, packed with filler, which then cause condensation. Ventilation grilles. And the tops of door frames, where nobody looks.

Miss those four and the flat will keep producing dust for months, and no amount of washing the floor again will change it.

Why not to clean immediately

Let the dust settle for at least a day after the crew leaves. Cleaning on the last day of the work means the airborne dust lands on surfaces you have just cleaned, and half the job is repeated.

Protection is not a formality

Fine cement and gypsum dust is harmful to the lungs, and a respirator here is a condition of the work rather than a gesture. Our cleaners work in masks and gloves, and we advise the same for anyone doing it themselves — especially at the stage where dust is lifted with a vacuum and a brush rather than washed away.

The second point is ventilation. Air the space throughout the work, not afterwards: otherwise the lifted dust settles in the same room it was just taken from.

How to book

Enter the area in the post-renovation cleaning form. For the order of work in a new build, see cleaning a new build.

Questions and answers

Why does dust come back after cleaning?

It settles out of the air for a day or more, and it also blows out of radiators and ventilation grilles. Hence the return pass a day or two later.

Can an ordinary vacuum handle it?

No. Fine dust destroys a bagless machine and returns to the room through the filter. A bag and HEPA are needed.

What does it cost?

UAH 150 per square metre, minimum order 3,000 — the same rate as post-renovation cleaning.

When should the cleaner come?

A day after the crew leaves, once the bulk of the dust has settled.
