Spring Cleaning Checklist: Room by Room
Spring cleaning fails for one reason: it is started without a plan, from whichever room the door opens onto, and abandoned halfway. A plan solves this, because the work turns out to be finite — a one-bedroom flat is a weekend, and most of what feels endless is actually a short list of jobs done once a year.
What you need
- All-purpose cleaner and a bathroom cleaner
- Glass cleaner or 1 teaspoon of detergent per litre
- Baking soda and white vinegar 9 %
- Rubbish bags and boxes for sorting
- A vacuum with attachments
- A mop and bucket
- Microfibre cloths, a stack of them
- A squeegee and a step stool
Time: 9 hours for a one-bedroom flat, best split across two days.
Step by step
- Declutter before you clean. One room at a time, three piles: keep, give away, throw out. Cleaning around things you are about to discard is wasted work.
- Work top down in every room. Light fittings, the tops of cupboards, shelves, furniture, skirting, floor — last.
- Do the windows early. On an overcast day and before the floors, because water and dirt come off the frames.
- Take the kitchen in one block. Oven, hood, fridge, cupboard fronts, and only then the floor.
- Then the bathroom. Limescale, grout, the shower screen — each with its own product and its own dwell time.
- Finish with textiles. Curtains in the wash, carpets and upholstery vacuumed, and the whole flat aired.
Method 2 — the once-a-year list
These are the jobs that do not appear in weekly cleaning and are what make the difference in spring: behind and under the fridge, the tops of cupboards, radiators inside the fins, the washing-machine drawer and its filter, the extractor filter, light fittings, the balcony, the medicine box and the freezer defrost. Nine items — and going through them once is what separates a spring clean from a longer ordinary one.
Method 3 — spreading it over a week
If a weekend is not available, the same list divides into evenings: kitchen on Monday, bathroom on Tuesday, bedroom Wednesday, living room Thursday, windows and balcony at the weekend. An hour a day, and by Sunday everything is done — for most households this works better than one long day, because the result is visible from the first evening.
What to avoid
- Starting with the floors. Everything from above lands on them and it all has to be done again.
- Cleaning without decluttering. Half the time goes on moving objects you meant to throw away.
- Windows in bright sun. The solution dries before the squeegee reaches it and leaves streaks.
- Trying to do it all in one day. By the eighth hour the quality falls and the last rooms get a token pass.
What to do first if time is short
If there is only an evening, three jobs give most of the visible effect: windows, the kitchen fronts and the floors including under the furniture. The flat reads as clean after those, and the remaining items are structural rather than visible and can wait a week without anyone noticing.
The reverse also holds: the tops of cupboards and behind the fridge change nothing about how the flat looks, which is exactly why they are skipped year after year and why they are worth putting on a written list rather than trusting to memory.
When to call a cleaner
A deep clean by a team takes three to four hours instead of a weekend, and it exists precisely for this list: the kitchen with the oven and the hood, the bathroom, the tops of cupboards and the skirting. A standard clean starts from UAH 1,550 and a deep clean is UAH 2,800; windows are UAH 320 each. If there is more work than usual, an extra hour is UAH 450 or a second cleaner UAH 1,000. Decluttering stays with the owner — those are decisions nobody else can make. Price it in the order form.
