How to Remove Pet Hair From Furniture

Hair does not lie on upholstery, it works into it: the fibre catches the hair and static holds it there, which is why a vacuum passes over and takes half of it at best. Anything that beats a vacuum here works on the same principle — friction and moisture release the hair from the fabric first, and only then is it collected.

What you need

  • Water in a spray bottle — with 1 teaspoon of fabric conditioner per 500 ml
  • Baking soda — for odour alongside the hair
  • A rubber washing-up glove
  • A damp sponge or a window squeegee
  • A lint roller
  • A vacuum with an upholstery head

Time: 25 minutes for a sofa and an armchair.

Step by step

  1. Mist the surface lightly. Water with a little conditioner kills the static that holds the hair in the fabric.
  2. Work with a rubber glove. Short strokes in one direction: the hair rolls into a clump that lifts off in one piece.
  3. Do the seams and joints. A damp sponge along the seam, where the densest hair sits.
  4. Then vacuum. Now the vacuum works, because the hair is loose on the surface rather than in the fibre.
  5. Finish with a roller. For what is left on cushions and armrests.
  6. Refresh with soda. Where the animal sleeps: an hour, then vacuum, and the smell goes with the hair.

Method 2 — a squeegee on carpet

A rubber window squeegee pulled across a carpet gathers hair a vacuum leaves behind: the rubber grips the fibre and lifts what is wound around the base of the pile. It takes longer than vacuuming and works better, and on a rug with a long pile it is realistically the only method that does anything.

Method 3 — clothing and blankets

In the wash, hair from one item transfers to everything else. It is easier to run the blanket through a tumble dryer on a cool cycle first — the filter catches most of it — or to go over it with a roller before washing. Half a cup of vinegar in the rinse also releases hair from the fabric rather than fixing it.

Method 4 — the air, not the surfaces

Hair does not stay on furniture: it circulates, settles on every horizontal surface and comes back to the sofa within a day, which is why cleaning one item never seems to hold. What actually changes the background level is a vacuum with a HEPA filter and airing the rooms in the morning, when the dust that rose overnight is still suspended. Neither replaces cleaning, but both cut how often it is needed.

What to avoid

  • Wetting the fabric heavily. Hair sticks to damp upholstery and comes off worse than from dry.
  • A stiff brush on velour. The hair comes out and the pile stays flattened.
  • Washing a pet bed with everything else. The hair spreads through the whole load.
  • Expecting a robot vacuum to cope. It manages the floor, but not upholstery or the base of a pile.

What reduces the shedding itself

Brushing the animal is the one thing that changes the amount of hair rather than dealing with the consequences: five minutes a day removes the loose undercoat before it reaches the sofa. During the moult a furminator does more in one session than a week of cleaning.

The second measure is a throw on the animal's usual spot. It washes easily, and the sofa underneath stays out of the process — cheaper than upholstery cleaning by any measure.

When to call a cleaner

Hair worked into a sofa over years, together with the smell, is where the home methods stop: extraction cleaning of a sofa costs UAH 1,299 and a carpet UAH 130 per square metre. A litter tray area is a separate item at UAH 180. A powerful vacuum is available as an extra at UAH 599 within a flat clean, and for a home with animals that is usually more useful than an extra hour of work.

Frequently asked questions

What removes pet hair from a sofa?

A damp rubber glove, then a vacuum. The glove releases the hair from the fibre, which a vacuum alone does not.

How do I get hair off a carpet?

A rubber window squeegee across the pile. It picks up what a vacuum leaves at the base.

How do I stop the smell of an animal in upholstery?

Dry soda for an hour, then vacuum. If the smell is in the filling, only extraction removes it.
