How to Remove Limescale in a Bathroom and on Taps
Limescale is the salt left behind when water evaporates. It does not rub off: the harder you press, the more scratches you leave and the faster the scale settles next time. Only acid dissolves it, and the whole job comes down to matching its strength to the material underneath.
What you need
- Citric acid — 2 teaspoons per 200 ml of warm water
- White vinegar 9 % — for taps and the shower head
- Baking soda — for combined soap and scale deposits
- An acidic bathroom cleaner — for neglected cases
- Spray bottle
- Microfibre cloths, two
- An old toothbrush for the base of the tap
- A plastic bag and a rubber band for the shower head
Time: 40 minutes including dwell time.
Step by step
- Remove the soap layer first. Wash the surface with an ordinary cleaner: acid cannot reach scale through a film of soap.
- Mix the solution. Two teaspoons of citric acid in 200 ml of warm water in a spray bottle, shaken until dissolved.
- Apply and wait. Fifteen minutes on fresh scale, up to thirty on old. The surface must stay wet — re-spray if it dries.
- Brush the base of the tap. Where the spout meets the basin the deposit is thickest and fingers cannot reach.
- Rinse with plenty of water. Acid is never left on “to keep working” — it keeps working on the chrome too.
- Dry the surface. This is the actual prevention: a dry surface grows no new scale.
Method 2 — the shower head
The easiest way is not to remove it: pour vinegar into a bag, slip it over the head, secure it with a rubber band so the holes are submerged, leave an hour. Then run hot water and the scale comes out of the jets by itself. If the head unscrews, it simply goes into a bowl of the same solution.
Method 3 — neglected scale
Citric acid struggles with years of build-up. Here you need an acidic bathroom cleaner based on phosphoric or sulfamic acid, dwell time strictly per the label, and ventilation. Use it only on ceramic tiles, chrome and stainless steel — never on stone, acrylic or grout.
What to avoid
- Acid on natural or engineered stone. Marble, travertine and composite are etched permanently: the surface goes matt and rough.
- Acid on an acrylic bath. Acrylic yellows and loses its gloss; it takes only mild, acid-free products.
- Scouring powder on chrome. A scratched finish collects scale faster than a smooth one.
- Mixing acid with chlorine products. The reaction gives off a caustic gas — this is a safety matter, not a cleaning one.
Why scale returns so quickly
One reason: the water is not wiped off. Every drop that dries on a surface leaves its share of salts, and within a week those shares add up to a visible layer. So the key to a bathroom is not the product but forty seconds with a microfibre after a shower — that does more than a deep clean once a quarter.
The second reason is water hardness. In Lviv it is moderate, but in buildings with old pipes scale forms noticeably faster because of iron in the water: rust marks join the limescale, and the same acidic cleaner takes both.
When to call a cleaner
Fresh scale is forty minutes of work and needs nobody called out. It is different when a bathroom has been left: soap deposits, rust by the drain and darkened grout all join in, each coming off with its own product in its own order — two to three hours in all.
