How to Remove a Stain From a Mattress

A mattress cannot be taken to the sink, and that is the whole difficulty: any excess moisture goes straight into the filling, where it dries for days and turns into a smell. So the technique is the opposite of ordinary laundry — the minimum of liquid, worked from the edge of the stain inwards, and dried immediately.

What you need

• Hydrogen peroxide 3 % — for blood and protein stains
• Baking soda — 3 tablespoons
• White vinegar 9 % — 1 part to 2 parts water, for urine
• Washing-up liquid — 1 teaspoon per 500 ml

• Spray bottle
• White microfibre cloths — coloured ones transfer dye
• A soft brush
• A vacuum with an upholstery head

Time: 40 minutes plus several hours of drying.

Step by step

1. Vacuum the surface. Dust worked into a wet stain leaves a grey halo that is harder to remove than the stain.
2. Identify the stain. Blood and sweat are protein, urine is salts and ammonia, coffee is a dye. The product depends on this and nothing else.
3. Apply from the outside in. Spray the edge first and move inwards so the mark does not spread.
4. Blot with a dry cloth. Pressure, not friction. Rubbing pushes the stain into the filling where nothing can reach it.
5. Neutralise with soda. Sprinkle over the damp patch, leave an hour, vacuum off. It draws out both moisture and odour.
6. Dry it completely. A fan or an open window for four hours minimum. A mattress must not be made up damp.

Method 2 — blood

Only cold water and 3 % peroxide. Hot water coagulates the protein and fixes the stain permanently. Apply the peroxide neat, wait for it to foam, blot, repeat if needed. On coloured ticking test first: peroxide can lighten dye.

Method 3 — urine

The problem here is not the mark but the salts, which is why the smell comes back in damp weather even after the stain has gone. Vinegar solution one to two dissolves the salts, then soda absorbs what is left, and only then does it get vacuumed. On an old dried stain a single pass is rarely enough, and two or three are normal.

Method 4 — sweat and yellowing

Yellow patches on an older mattress are not dirt but oxidised sweat, and they are the hardest thing on the list. Peroxide with a little washing-up liquid lightens them by a shade or two, applied thinly and dried at once; nothing removes them completely. It is worth attempting only on a mattress that is otherwise sound — on one already past its life, the yellowing is the least of its problems and a new mattress costs less than repeated attempts.

What to avoid

• Hot water on protein stains. The mark sets and no product removes it afterwards.
• Chlorine bleach. It leaves a yellow patch on the ticking and destroys the fibre.
• Soaking the mattress. Water in the filling means mould, and the mattress will have to be thrown out.
• Making the bed while damp. Under a sheet the moisture has nowhere to go and the smell appears within a day.

What keeps stains away

A waterproof protector solves the problem entirely: it costs less than one cleaning and goes in the wash like a sheet. It is the single most effective step with a mattress, especially with small children or animals in the house.

Beyond that, the routine is simple: turn the mattress every three months, vacuum it when you change the bedding, and air the room in the morning — sweat evaporates from an uncovered mattress far better than from one made up straight away.

When to call a cleaner

Old and repeated stains are where home methods run out: the salts have gone deep into the filling and only extraction pulls them back. Cleaning a mattress on one side costs from UAH 600, a double mattress more. The minimum order is UAH 2,000, so a mattress is usually taken together with a sofa in one visit.
