How to Clean Grease Off Kitchen Cabinets

Grease on kitchen fronts collects not where you cook but where the steam rises — on the upper cabinets and the wall beside the hob. The film stays invisible for a long time because it builds up evenly, and people usually discover it by touch: the surface has gone tacky. The method depends on the material of the door, and here a mistake costs more than the grease.

What you need

• Baking soda — 2 tablespoons
• Washing-up liquid — 1 tablespoon per litre of warm water
• White vinegar 9 % — for glass inserts
• Vegetable oil — a teaspoon for sticky patches

• Microfibre cloths, two
• A soft sponge with no abrasive layer
• An old toothbrush for mouldings and handles

Time: 90 minutes for a medium kitchen.

Step by step

1. Start at the top. The tops of the cabinets and the cornices carry the thickest layer, and anything that falls lands on the lower doors.
2. Apply the soapy solution. One tablespoon of washing-up liquid per litre of warm water, with a sponge, no pressure.
3. Give it five minutes. The solution has to soften the film; rubbing at this stage only spreads the grease.
4. Work the mouldings. Corners, grooves and the area under the handles with a toothbrush — that is where most of it stays.
5. Lift the residue. Clean damp microfibre, changing the water as soon as it clouds.
6. Dry thoroughly. Especially joints and edges: water in an MDF seam lifts the edging, and that cannot be undone.

Method 2 — soda for stubborn areas

Where grease has baked on beside the hob, mix soda with water into a paste, apply it to the spot and leave for ten minutes. Lift it with a soft sponge, never the abrasive side. Soda works well on foil-wrapped and painted MDF, but not on oiled wooden doors — it strips the oil along with the grease.

Method 3 — oil against stickiness

It sounds odd, but on an old sticky film oil beats detergent: a teaspoon on a cotton pad, wipe the patch, give it a minute, then wash off with soapy water. Fat dissolves in fat. This is for individual patches, not a whole kitchen.

What to avoid

• Abrasive sponges and powder. They leave matt streaks on foil and scratches across painted MDF.
• A steam cleaner on foil-wrapped doors. Hot steam lifts the film at the edge and the door has to be replaced.
• Flooding the joint between door and carcass. MDF swells and the edging comes away.
• Anything with acetone or solvent. Gloss goes instantly and permanently.

Identifying the material

This decides what you can use. Foil-wrapped MDF shows a seam on the edge and feels uniform. Painted MDF has an even deep colour with no seam, often gloss. Wood shows a grain that does not repeat on the neighbouring door. HPL laminate feels cold and barely scratches under a fingernail.

A simple rule: if you are not sure, start with soapy water and a soft sponge. It is safe on all four, and nine times out of ten it is enough.

The places people miss

• The top surface of the cabinets. Out of sight, and the thickest layer of all.
• Handles and the area beneath them. Finger grease builds up faster than cooking grease.
• The inside of the door next to the hob. Steam gets in every time the cupboard is opened while cooking.
• The joint between worktop and wall. Everything runs in there and dries; a toothbrush is unavoidable.

When to call a cleaner

The fronts are manageable on your own. The insides are another matter: everything comes out, shelves and walls get washed and it all goes back — three or four hours for a medium kitchen.
