How to Clean a Sofa at Home Without Ruining It
A sofa is the one item where the wrong product costs more than the cleaning: a water stain on a W-coded fabric never comes out, and velour flattens permanently if you rub it. So the work starts not with a product but with the label under the seat, where the manufacturer has written what the upholstery tolerates.
What you need
- Upholstery shampoo or 1 teaspoon of washing-up liquid per litre of warm water
- Baking soda — 3 tablespoons for odours
- White vinegar 9 % — 2 tablespoons per litre for a rinse
- Isopropyl alcohol — for S-coded fabrics only
- A vacuum with an upholstery head
- A soft brush
- Microfibre cloths, several
- A spray bottle
Time: 60 minutes plus drying.
Step by step
- Find the code. W means water-based cleaning, S means solvent only, WS both, X vacuuming alone. This single letter decides everything that follows.
- Vacuum thoroughly. Seams, under the cushions, the back. Any wet work over dry dust turns it into a grey stain.
- Test on a hidden patch. The back of the sofa or under a cushion, ten minutes, then check for a ring or a colour change.
- Work with foam, not water. Whisk the solution and apply only the foam with a brush: it lifts dirt without soaking the filling.
- Blot, do not rub. Clean microfibre pressed into the fabric, changed as it picks up dirt. Rubbing drives the stain deeper and felts the pile.
- Dry it fast. Open windows, a fan on the sofa. Anything still damp after twelve hours starts to smell.
Method 2 — odours
Dry baking soda over the whole surface, an hour, then vacuum off. It absorbs smells rather than covering them, which is why it beats a scented spray. On a sofa a pet has slept on for years the effect is partial: the odour is in the filling, not the cover, and surface work cannot reach it.
Method 3 — fresh stains
Everything depends on the first minute. Blot liquid with a dry cloth immediately — most of it comes out before it reaches the foam. Wine and coffee then take soda paste; grease takes washing-up liquid; blood only cold water, since hot sets the protein and fixes the mark for good.
Method 4 — the parts nobody cleans
Two places hold more dirt than the seat and are almost never touched. The first is under the cushions, where crumbs and dust compact into a layer that a vacuum reaches only with the narrow nozzle. The second is the back of the sofa against the wall: dust settles there in a thick film and comes back onto the fabric with every draught. Ten minutes on both, twice a year, and the sofa stays clean noticeably longer between deeper cleans.
What to avoid
- Water on an S-coded fabric. It leaves a ring that is far more visible than the original mark.
- Rubbing velour. The flattened pile does not lift again and the patch stays shiny.
- Soaking the seat. Wet filling dries for days and grows mould inside.
- A steam cleaner on natural fabrics. Cotton and linen shrink at the seams and the cover no longer fits.
Where home cleaning ends
Two honest limits. Old stains that have already been treated once are usually fixed by the previous attempt, and a second round achieves little. And dirt in the filling — a sofa slept on daily for years — cannot be lifted by hand: it needs extraction, where the machine injects solution and draws it back out with the dirt.
Everything else is realistically a home job, and a sofa given an hour twice a year rarely reaches the state where it needs a machine at all.
When to call a cleaner
Extraction cleaning of a sofa costs UAH 1,299, an armchair UAH 450. The minimum order for upholstery cleaning is UAH 2,000, so a sofa is usually booked together with a carpet at UAH 130 per square metre or with the chairs. The machine takes out what a brush cannot: the water that comes back is the argument.
Frequently asked questions
Can I clean a sofa with a steam cleaner?
On synthetics yes, carefully. On cotton, linen and velour no — the fabric shrinks and the pile flattens.
How do I get a smell out of a sofa?
Dry soda for an hour, then vacuum. If the smell is in the filling, only extraction helps.
What does the S on the label mean?
Solvent cleaning only. Water on such fabric leaves a permanent ring.
