How to Clean Shower Screen Glass from Limescale
There are always two layers on shower glass at once: soap film on top and limescale underneath. That is why “nothing works” — acid cannot reach the scale through the soap, and detergent does nothing to the scale. Only the sequence works: remove the soap first, then dissolve the salts.
What you need
- Washing-up liquid — 1 teaspoon per 500 ml of water
- Citric acid — 2 teaspoons per 200 ml of warm water
- White vinegar 9 % — as an alternative to the acid
- Baking soda — for spots on plastic
- Spray bottle
- A rubber squeegee
- Microfibre cloths, two
- Melamine sponge for the frame
Time: 30 minutes.
Step by step
- Warm the enclosure. Run hot water for two minutes and close the door: steam softens both layers at once.
- Take off the soap layer. Detergent solution from the spray bottle, soft sponge over the whole glass.
- Rinse it clean. Do not skip this: soap residue neutralises the acid at the next stage.
- Apply the acid. Two teaspoons of citric acid in 200 ml of water, fifteen minutes, keeping the glass wet.
- Pull it off with the squeegee. Top to bottom, overlapping strokes, wiping the blade after each pass.
- Polish with dry microfibre. This is what removes streaks, not more product.
Method 2 — frame and tray
The aluminium frame and the runners take a melamine sponge and soda paste, but no acid: it eats the anodised finish and leaves white patches. Slime collects in the runners and comes out easily with an old toothbrush. An acrylic tray takes only mild products: abrasives and acid leave matt marks on acrylic that do not come out.
Method 3 — the water-repellent coating
Many enclosures have a factory coating that makes water bead and run off. It lasts a few years and is destroyed by abrasives, strong acid and oven cleaners. If the coating still works, look after it with mild detergent and the squeegee. If it has gone, it can be renewed with automotive rain repellent: applied to clean dry glass, it lasts about six months.
What to avoid
- Abrasive sponges on glass. The micro-scratches are invisible at first, but scale settles into them and then never comes out.
- Acid on the aluminium frame. The anodising breaks down and leaves white etched patches.
- Oven cleaner on acrylic. Alkali dulls the surface in a single application.
- Cleaning cold glass. On warm glass both layers come away twice as fast.
How to avoid cleaning it weekly
One rule matters most: run the squeegee over the glass after a shower. Thirty seconds, and there is nothing for limescale to form from — it is the drop drying on the glass that leaves the salt. The second most effective step is to stop using bar soap in the enclosure: it leaves a dense film, unlike shower gel.
Third is ventilation. An enclosure that dries within an hour collects scale far more slowly than one still wet the following evening.
When to call a cleaner
An enclosure with years of scale is a case where the home method gives half a result at best: the layer comes off in stages, and on scratched glass it does not come off at all. As part of the bathroom this is included in bathroom cleaning at UAH 450, and the bathroom itself is already counted in a flat clean from UAH 1,550. The cleaner also knows where to stop: scratched glass is beyond any product, and it is better to hear that before the work than after.
Frequently asked questions
What removes the white film from shower glass?
Detergent first to lift the soap, then citric acid — two teaspoons per 200 ml, fifteen minutes.
Can I use glass cleaner on the enclosure?
For upkeep yes. It does nothing to limescale: that needs acid.
How do I get rid of the smell from the tray?
Flush the drain with soda and boiling water and check the trap: the smell almost always comes from there rather than the glass.
